Membership

In order to keep track of who has what status inside the club, we have a hierarchy of positions. Below is an explanation of these different positions, and how to become each.

Positions

There are several categories of membership for the Chocolatiers. At the lowest end are those who are on our general mailing list, chocolatiers@mit.edu. These folks hear about all events, probably before posters go up or anything like that, but they don't help out at events. This list is public, so you can join at Athena List management.

The next level up involves those on the volunteers mailing list, chocolatiers-volunteers@mit.edu. This list will often hear about an event first, as this is for people interested in helping out at events. If someone on this list doesn't actually go to anything for too long, they're liable to be taken off. This list is also public, and you can join at Athena List management as with the general mailing list.

Once a volunteer has given a certain amount of help (see below), he or she is considered a full member and has access to certain privileges. These specifically include getting in for free to public events where we ask a fee, and being allowed to come to special members-only events.

Officers are the next level up. They are in charge of various aspects of running the club. Theoretically they will be voted on at regular intervals (currently they're all volunteers). There is another page devoted to the Officers.

After spending some time in the club and running a few events or taking an officer position (again, see below), a full member becomes a permanent member. A permanent member has all of the benefits of a current member, with the added bonus that after a year has passed he or she will still be a member! Permanent members have put enough time and effort into the club that they receive all the bonuses of being a full member for the rest of their lives (Note: under discussion), regardless of future activeness in the club.

Points

Activeness is judged on a point system. To maintain membership status, a volunteer has to accumulate five points over the course of the year. There are a lot of ways to gain points, though, especially over IAP, so this really isn't hard.

In general, for helping with an event, the points are as follows:
1 point for getting supplies, or other very small jobs in relation to an event; also for coming to a meeting
2 points for helping set up or run the event
4 points for being in charge of the event

Some events, such as truffle selling, are exceptionally large and require quite a bit more work. These events will be worth twice as many points, and will be noted as such.

The person in charge of the event will turn in a sheet listing who helped and how many points they earned at the end of the event. Should the person in charge fail to turn this in within a reasonable amount of time (to be determined, probably about a month), then he or she will not receive points for the event, and an e-mail will be sent out to the volunteers list telling those who helped out to contact the president with how many points they earned.
